PostSubject: Penanggal (Flying head).   Wed May 02, 2018 4:45 am

In Southeast Asian mythology, Penanggal is a vile creature which hunts and suck blood from any woman whom is giving birth, resulting death to both mother and infant. If it couldn't find any women giving birth that night, it will prey on any unfortunate soul who strays far their home after the sun goes down.

The appearance of Penanggal is enough to scare anyone(children and adults alike) from coming out from their house after sunset. Penanggal(Pe-nang-gal) means "detached" and as the name implies, Penanggal is actually a detached head with innards like lungs, hearts and intestines attached to it as it fly through the night sky for hunting.

Penanggal hunts at night and return to its hiding before dawn to reattach with the remaining body. It is believed the sunlight will burn this creature into ashes if exposed to it.

Due to its nature, it is not wrong to say Penanggal is a type of vampiric spirit, although other versions mentioned Penanggal will also feast on the flesh of dead person whom just died.

Some people believe Penanggal isn't really a spirit, but a person (mostly young women) whom practices a dark magic or making pact with a devil to become one so that he@she will always look young and live forever. Few believed Penanggal is actually a curse or hereditary disease.

The Penanggal-people usually live far from the rest of the villagers so that no one knows their secrets. They didn't stay long in one place and will move to a new feeding ground after they managed to kill several victims. This was done to avoid suspicion, especially when people start looking out for the culprit behind the gruesome deaths occured in their village.

It is believed Penanggal-people will keep a giant pottery jar filled with vinegar which they will soak their dangling organs until they shrink in size, making it easier for the Penanggal to insert the organs back into its body during the attachment.

When a Penanggal starts to wreck havoc in a village, hiding in house before sunset may seems the best idea but the truth is, it isn't. The blood sucking monster still can go through holes and cracks to attack its victim. Bonus if the victim forgot to close their windows or doors. To avoid this, people will put glass shards or menkuang leaves(a type of plant which has spiky leaves) on the roof and around their houses. Penanggal is scared of these sharp objects as they could inflict injuries to its organs.

Sharp objects are not the only weaknesses, and what a Penanggal fears the most is when the villagers discover its headless body and hide it away while it goes on hunt. If this happens, it can't return back to its body and if the Penanggal fail find a hiding spot before the sunrise, its death will be certain.
-END.

Note : Obayifo from African mythology which shares similar traits to Asian Penanggal. In Japan, they called it Nekukubi while Thailand had their own version of Penanggal which they name it Krasue.
