PostSubject: origin and history of Chinese astrology   Fri Sep 28, 2012 8:39 am

Chinese astrology had been rooted since thousands years ago and believed to be one of the earliest. Chinese astrology is one of the most important field that must be learned by the Chinese people during the ancient time. because with it, they could interpret weather, prophecies, seasons and directions.

Astrology also play an important part in Chinese people's culture since it is an important tool to determine perfect time for events like marriage since they believe about years that could bring prosperity(preferable for the events) and they will avoid the years that will bring bad luck. there are 3 main part of Chinese Astrology which is lunar cycle, elements, and zodiac signs.

1. lunar cycle
Chinese astrological systems is differences than western's astrology since it based on lunar calendar to indicate months or years. The reason why Chinese new year always fall on a different date for every year is because lunar calendar consist of a moon cycle which took 29days to complete. That's means, 1 year consist of 12 lunar cycle(months) with average 29days for each months.

Chinese astrology also included 5 elements into their calendar system which is in an order like wood, fire, earth, metal and water. it is in such order because the elements of wood will produce fire, fire will produces earth, earth will produces metal, metal will produce water and finally water will produce wood, once again completing the cycle. these elements had been positioned into the calendar with corresponding zodiac signs and become a guideline for Astrologer to learn about these elements and effects on human's behavior.

3. Zodiac signs
apart from that, Chinese astrology also had their own Zodiac signs which is a cycle of 12years and accompanied by 12 different animals like Rat, Ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

what interesting is the reasons for these selection of animals used for this zodiac signs is something that couldn't be found in any written texts, and the only reliable information is the legends of all animals racing in a competition being held by a Buddha and only 12 of these animals selected as winner and each being honored to become a symbol of the years. however, the zodiac signs is significance for them to know about their personality, as well as the luck or omen that these zodiac could bring. Each zodiac signs had been matched with the elements in for the calendar of cycle of years.

Chinese astrology, like other astrology systems had been used even though in this this modern day, the usage of the Chinese astrology is still practical and this making it one of the oldest astrological system that ever existed in this world.

Just as my astrological sign suits my personality dead-on, my zodiac, the year of the Tiger, does too!

In brief...

Tigers love to be challenged and will accept any challenge if it means protecting a loved one or protecting their honor. They don’t worry about the outcome because they know they’ll always land on their feet. Don’t let their calm appearance fool you though; Tigers will pounce when they feel it’s necessary.

Born to lead, Tigers can be stubborn if they realize they’re not in charge. They have a slight tendency to be selfish but overall, Tigers are extremely generous. They’re very intelligent and they’re always on alert. Tigers are very charming and are well-liked by others. They are not motivated by money or power.
